The City of Victoria installs 12 public FLO chargers

At 25 cents per hour to charge, these are the first of over 100 Level 2 and Level 3 chargers in British Columbia’s capital.

QUEBEC CITY, QC – June 27, 2022 – The City of Victoria, BC, has just installed and activated 12 public FLO electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, as part of the city’s long-term strategy to develop its EV infrastructure and support EV adoption.

“British Columbia is one of the leading jurisdictions in the shift to clean energy, and particularly in the expansion of EV infrastructure, and we are proud to support them” said Michael Pelsoci, FLO’s Regional Sales Director for the Pacific Northwest region. “As the leading EV charging network in Canada and one of the fastest growing networks across North America, FLO’s mission to support EV adoption across North America has always been at the forefront of what we do. We are proud to support the City of Victoria, BC’s capital city, in its efforts to expand EV infrastructure.”

The 12 Level 2 public chargers are located on the fifth floor of the View Street parkade. These chargers support drivers who are visiting Victoria’s many great restaurants and shops, who need to charge their vehicles while they are at work, and garage orphans (Victorians who don’t have a dedicated home charger) who need to leave their vehicles to charge safely overnight.

To ensure that EV charging is widely accessible to drivers using the parkade, the cost will only be $0.25 per every hour of charging, a competitive cost thanks to the chargers’ use of a PowerSharing™ network. This feature will share power from each electrical circuit between four EV chargers. This means that sites that feature multiple charging stations can be configured for power sharing at the circuit breaker level, which is a valuable tool where a dedicated circuit is not available for each charging station.

Power sharing is a common occurrence in many buildings that were previously built without an EV charging option but were retrofitted for that purpose retroactively, especially where vehicles may be parked and not used for a period of time, such as overnight charging in a fleet or residential locations.

“By 2035, only zero-emission vehicle sales will be allowed in Canada, and, for that mandate to be met successfully, Canadians need the reliable, affordable, and widely available infrastructure to be ready for it,” said Mayor Lisa Helps. “The City of Victoria is adamant about providing Victorians with the EV charging infrastructure that they need in terms of quality and affordability. We are pleased to be collaborating with the highly reliable FLO EV charging network to ensure that our goals and strategies are met.”

The City of Victoria will install a total of more than 100 Level 2 chargers and six Level 3 (DC Fast Chargers) throughout 2022. The FLO chargers will be installed in City-owned parkades, on curbsides, and within communities. A $1.5 million investment in EV infrastructure is part of the City’s 2022 budget with additional funding from the Province of British Columbia and the Federal Government.

Funding for the View Street parkade chargers was provided in part by NRCan’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program for BC Public Charging Stations in partnership with BC Hydro. NRCan provided BC Hydro with a total investment of $325,000 to support the installation of 65 Level 2 EV chargers across British Columbia.
